Grapes vs Carrots

Generations of children have had to be cajoled into eating their carrots 🥕 with the promise that the vegetables are good for their eyesight. Now new research has delivered a much sweeter deal, revealing that eating grapes is good for the eyes and could reduce the risk of going blind later in life.

The fruit protects against a chemical process known as oxidative stress, which releases harmful molecules called free radicals into the retina, the study found.

Grapes are rich in antioxidants that protect healthy cells from DNA damage and it is believed these compounds are behind the eyesight benefits. Eating grapes may help protect eye health, according to new research published in the journal Nutrition, in keeping with previous studies that indicate grape-derived compounds are biologically active in the retina.

The retina is the part of the eye that contains the cells that respond to light, known as photoreceptors. Retinal degenerative diseases cause progressive photoreceptor death and irreversible vision impairment, including blindness, affecting millions of people in the U.S. Elevated oxidative stress is strongly associated with retinal disease and has been widely studied in the development of age-related macular degeneration and other retinal degenerations.

Widely recognised as a superfood, grapes are packed with vitamins C and K and beta- carotene, which help rid the body of free radicals, by-products of oxygen use that cause cellular damage.

And in further benefits, research by scientists at the University of Glasgow found that the antioxidant benefits of drinking purple grape juice could also reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

These results are very exciting and build on the growing evidence that suggests a very real benefit for grape consumption and eye health along with your yearly eye exams.

August: Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

August is dedicated to preventing eye injuries and vision loss and saving children’s eyesight. One of 20 children ages 3 to 5 has a vision problem that could result in permanent vision if left untreated. Despite this unsettling statistics, 80 percent of preschoolers do not receive an eye screening. Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month encourages parents to learn how to protect their child’s eyesight and save their child’s eyesight from vision threatening conditions through regular eye exams.

How Important Is It To Have An Eye Exam?

Children should have an eye exam at 6 months and this must be repeated at age 3. Once they start school, eye exams must be done regularly. About 80% of what children learn in school is taught visually, which means if a child has undetected and uncorrected vision problem, it will affect the child’s development and performances in school. Some warning signs that your child may be experiences vision problems are:

  • Tilting the head or squinting to see the class board better or when watching TV
  • Frequent eye rubbing when he’s trying to concentrate on something.
  • Holding a book too close to his eyes or often sitting close to the TV.
  • Consistently using his fingers to guide his eyes when reading.
  • Closing one eye to read or watch TV.
  • Excessive tearing without any tear-causing stimuli.
  • Eye discomfort when using a computer or any digital device i.e digital eye strain.
  • Sensitivity to light, which is sometimes accompanied by headache or nausea.
  • Wandering eyes.

Special Tips on Children’s Eye Health and Safety

Early detection of vision conditions is crucial. Red flags that a child may have a vision problem, are uneven focus, amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes). Lazy eye is often corrected if treatment started at an early age; however, successful treatment is rarely achieved if treatment has started after a child reaches 8 or 9 years old.

Protect your child from eye injuries by ensuring your children’s toys are age-appropriate and not a danger to their eyes. Check if your child’s toys or stuff are free of sharp or protruding parts that could accidentally poke the eyes. Fireworks are also detrimental to your child’s safety, as it can cause blindness if not handled correctly.

Be aware that eye injuries can happen anytime, anywhere. Eye injuries are often caused by sports or physical activities, 90% could have been avoided if the child had worn protective eyewear, such as polycarbonate lenses fitted by an eye care professional. These lenses can withstand a ball traveling 90mph as it is 20 times stronger than ordinary eyeglasses.

It’s important to know that at Dr Boyer optometry we specialize in helping you keep your child’s vision healthy and obtain early diagnosis in case your child is suffering from vision problems, through a regular eye exam.

JULY: UV Safety Month

UV rays reflected off sand and water can cause eyes to sunburn, potentially resulting in temporary blindness in just a few hours. In support of UV Safety Month this July, we’d like to remind our patients of the importance of shielding eyes from the sun’s harmful rays with 100% UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats.

Here are some tips:

  • Don’t focus on color or darkness of sunglass lenses: Select sunglasses that block UV rays. Don’t be deceived by color or cost. The ability to block UV light is not dependent on the price tag or how dark the sunglass lenses are.
  • Check for 100 percent UV protection: Make sure your sunglasses block 100 percent of UV-A rays and UV-B rays.
  • Choose wrap-around styles: Ideally, your sunglasses, either the lenses of the frame, should wrap all the way around to your temples, so the sun’s rays can’t enter from the side.
  • Wear a hat: In addition to your sunglasses, wear a broad-brimmed hat to protect your eyes.
  • Don’t rely on contact lenses: Even if you wear contact lenses with UV protection, remember your sunglasses.

  • Don’t be fooled by clouds: The sun’s rays can pass through haze and thin clouds. Sun damage to eyes can occur anytime during the year, not just in the summertime.
  • Protect your eyes during peak sun times: Sunglasses should be worn whenever outside, and it’s especially important to wear sunglasses in the early afternoon and at higher altitudes, where UV light is more intense.
  • Never look directly at the sun. Looking directly at the sun at any time, including during an eclipse, can lead to solar retinopathy, damage to the eye’s retina from solar radiation.
  • Don’t forget the kids: Everyone is at risk, including children.
  • Protect their eyes with hats and sunglasses. In addition, if possible, try to keep children out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest.

In addition to the proper safety eyewear, regular eye exams for early detection and treatment of eye conditions and diseases are essential to maintaining good vision at every stage of life.

Schedule an annual comprehensive eye exam today with Dr Boyer or Dr Brian to ensure you’re staying on top of your health and can work with your doctor’s to address any issues.

JUNE: Cataract Awareness Month

Cataract is the world’s leading cause of blindness, accounting for approximately 42 percent of all cases of blindness in all nations. In the United States, more than 25 million Americans are estimated to have cataract. THE RISK OF CATARACT IS HIGHER FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS WITH THE DISEASE.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. The lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and the colored iris, and is normally transparent. Vision may become blurry or dim because the cataract stops light from properly passing through to the retina. Generally, a cataract does not cause pain, redness or tears.

Risk factors for cataracts include:

  • Older age
  • Long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun
  • Certain diseases, such as diabetes
  • Inflammation in the eye
  • Hereditary influences
  • Events before birth, such as German measles in the mother
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Eye injuries
  • Eye diseases
  • Smoking

Most cataract cases in the United States are in older adults, but children may also develop pediatric cataracts. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, cataracts in a child can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired (develop after birth). Without treatment, cataracts in young children can cause poor development of the visual pathway between the brain and the eye, leading to vision impairment. Therefore, diagnosing and treating cataracts early in children is critical to promoting normal vision development.

Although cataract is the world’s leading cause of vision loss, it is an eye disease that can be treated successfully with access to quality eyecare services. We strongly encourage everyone to educate themselves on cataract and what services are available to see clearly today and in the years to come.”

How To Prevent Cataracts?

Being outside in the sun may feel great, especially in the summer, but you need to protect your eyes. UV rays from the sun can lead to the early development of cataracts as well as other damage to your eyes

Some steps you can take now to protect your eyes and slow the progression from the formation of cataracts is:

  •  wear UV blocking sunglasses
  • take nutritional supplements,
  • quit smoking, and
  • learn your family health history
  • wear a wide-brimmed hat

We understand how precious your vision is, and one thing that can help keep your eyes healthy is a comprehensive eye exam at least once every year. It’s difficult to stress how vital annual eye exams are. Still, when it comes to detecting and diagnosing cataracts, they make a difference—seeing your eye doctor once a year allows them to monitor cataract progression and take action once cataract surgery becomes necessary.

Schedule your family’s eye exams today to get started with monitoring the health and risks for their eyes.

How To Get Rid Of Under Eye Bags

Under-eye swelling or puffiness is a common cosmetic concern. Often referred to as “eye bags,” these areas of swollen tissue under eyes can add to the appearance of aging or sleepiness. According to the Mayo Clinic, bags under eyes rarely signal a serious health condition, but many people still struggle with this feature of their appearance.

Puffy eyes and dark circles under the eyes occur for many reasons, including genetics, allergies, stress, eye fatigue, and salt consumption. Swelling around the eyes is caused by an accumulation of fluid in the surrounding skin tissue. Because the skin around the eyes is very thin, swelling and discoloration can be easily visible.

Bags under eyes generally result from a variety of factors, including:

  • A weakening of the muscles around the eyes, which happens naturally with age
  • Consuming too much salt
  • Allergies
  • Genetics
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Stress

Lifestyle Changes

Reduce your salt intake: Too much salt in your diet can cause your eyes to puff, as excess sodium levels can lead to fluid retention. If you think too much salt may be the cause of your puffy eyes, cut back on salty foods

Eat potassium-rich foods: A healthy intake of potassium acts as a counterbalance to high sodium levels. The combination of too much sodium and not enough potassium not only causes puffy eyes but relates to your cardiovascular health as well. Bananas, avocados, spinach, sweet potato, coconut water, yogurt, and other potassium-rich foods help restore the balance of potassium in your body and reduce the water retention that contributes to bags under the eyes.

Stay hydrated: When your body is dehydrated, it tries to retain more water, causing your under eye area to swell. The Mayo Clinic’s water drinking recommendations are that men drink about 3.7 liters of water per day, while women drink about 2.7 liters.

Manage Stress

Medical studies show that stress changes the salt balance in your body. If salt and water balances are off, your eyes can retain more water and swell as a result. Stress also causes some people to lose sleep. Lack of sleep causes the blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to dilate, creating the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. Look for ways to reduce your stress, such as the following recommended by the Cleveland Clinic:

  • Exercise
  • Quitting smoking
  • Meditation
  • Deep breathing
  • Counseling

Another way to reduce stress is by maintaining a relaxing bedtime routine.

Home Remedies for Puffy Eyes

To accelerate your treatments of puffy eyes, you can also use home remedies such as:

  • Chilled spoons
  • Frozen bags of peas
  • Gentle facial massages
  • Eye creams*
*Be aware some eye cream preservatives and retinoids around the eyes can cause skin dryness to the sensitive under eye area, or even do damage to the glands that nourish the eye, and can cause dry-eye syndrome. [dry eye syndrome or blepharoconjunctivitis are the most common side effects, appearing in 20-50% of patients treated with retinoids. They often contribute to other occurrences or side-effects such as ocular discomfort and contact lens intolerance.]

Surgery

With aging, and in other cases, the only true treatment might be a surgical procedure known as lower eyelid blepharoplasty. It’s always good to talk to our doctors who can recommend qualified surgeons in our area.

And last but not least…

Skin Protection

Protect your skin from the sun (sunlight damages the skin and makes eye bags worse)

  • Use UV protection sunblock
  • Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection (polarized vs non polarized sunglasses-we’ll post that in another blog article)
Schedule an appointment for your yearly eye exam and discuss this information with our doctors to get the best medical advice for your personal situation.

MAY: Healthy Vision Month

Vision Health for All Ages

You should have a dilated eye exam regularly to check for common eye problems.

We encourage all Americans to make vision a health priority this Healthy Vision Month.

  • Although older adults tend to have more vision problems, preschoolers may not see as well as they can.
  • Just 1 out of every 7 preschoolers receives an eye exam, and fewer than 1 out of every 4 receives some type of vision screening.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends vision screening for all children aged 3 to 5 years to find conditions such as amblyopia, or lazy eye, which can be treated effectively if caught early.

Some eye conditions can cause vision loss and even blindness. These include

  • Cataracts, a clouding of the eye.
  • Diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye.
  • Glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, often with increased eye pressure.
  • Age-related macular degeneration, which gradually affects central vision.

Other eye conditions, such as refractive errors, which happen when the shape of your eye doesn’t bend light correctly, are common problems easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or laser surgery. Americans aged 12 years and older could see better if they used corrective lenses, or eye surgery, if appropriate.

If you haven’t had an exam for some time, schedule one this month at one of our local offices:

APRIL: Sports Eye Safety Month

While many of us are aware of sports-related injuries, what you may not be aware of is that eye injuries account for a large amount of those injuries.

Annually, more than 25,000 people seek medical attention due to a sports-related eye injury. A third of those 25,000 injuries happen to children, the majority of them occurring in water-related sports, martial arts, boxing, basketball, baseball/softball, football, and soccer. So, just about every single sport you can think of, there’s a risk of getting an eye injury.

The good news in all of this is about 90% of these eye injuries can be prevented with use of protective eyewear. Many sports incorporate elements of this concept into their uniforms, the most common being helmets and masks.

It is also important to remember that regular prescription glasses do not offer proper eye protection against sports-related eye injuries. Regular glasses or sunglasses can shatter on impact, making an eye injury much worse.  Always use protective eye gear, such as safety glasses or goggles, safety shields, or eye guards depending on the sport. Sports glasses or goggles have polycarbonate lenses, which are more impact resistant. When considering protective eyewear for sports, also think about getting UV protection. They may not only reduce glare but protect your eyes from developing glaucoma or cataracts later in life.

If an eye injury unfortunately does occur, call us immediately, even if the injury appears to be a minor one. Delaying medical attention can result in permanent vision loss or blindness
