⚠️ Eye drops RECALL ⚠️

⚠️ Federal regulators are warning consumers to stop using a number of over-the-counter eye drops that may pose an infection risk.

According to the FDA, federal investigators found harmful bacteria and "insanitary conditions" at a factory where several eye drop products are made. The agency said it advised the manufacturer to recall the products.

Eye infection symptoms may include eye pain or discomfort, discharge, blurry vision, sensitivity to light, the feeling of a foreign object in the eye, as well as redness or swelling of the eye or eyelid, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 26 products treat dry or irritated eyes and were marketed under the brands CVS Health, Leader (Cardinal Health), Rugby (Cardinal Health), Rite Aid, Velocity Pharma and Target's Up & Up brand. (Complete list below)

APRIL: Sports Eye Safety Month

While many of us are aware of sports-related injuries, what you may not be aware of is that eye injuries account for a large amount of those injuries.

Annually, more than 25,000 people seek medical attention due to a sports-related eye injury. A third of those 25,000 injuries happen to children, the majority of them occurring in water-related sports, martial arts, boxing, basketball, baseball/softball, football, and soccer. So, just about every single sport you can think of, there’s a risk of getting an eye injury.

The good news in all of this is about 90% of these eye injuries can be prevented with use of protective eyewear. Many sports incorporate elements of this concept into their uniforms, the most common being helmets and masks.

It is also important to remember that regular prescription glasses do not offer proper eye protection against sports-related eye injuries. Regular glasses or sunglasses can shatter on impact, making an eye injury much worse.  Always use protective eye gear, such as safety glasses or goggles, safety shields, or eye guards depending on the sport. Sports glasses or goggles have polycarbonate lenses, which are more impact resistant. When considering protective eyewear for sports, also think about getting UV protection. They may not only reduce glare but protect your eyes from developing glaucoma or cataracts later in life.

If an eye injury unfortunately does occur, call us immediately, even if the injury appears to be a minor one. Delaying medical attention can result in permanent vision loss or blindness

National Safe Toy and Gifts month

Roughly 1 in 10 children's eye injuries that end up in the ER are caused by toys. In support of Safe Toys and Celebrations Month this December, Doctors advise parents to be cautious when choosing holiday gifts for young people and recommends avoiding those that launch projectiles, such as crossbows and BB guns.

  • Read labels for age recommendations before you buy. To select appropriate gifts suited for a child's age, look for and follow the age recommendations and instructions about proper assembly, use, and supervision.
  • Don't just give presents. Make sure to be present. Always make sure an adult is supervising when children are playing with potentially hazardous toys or games that could cause an eye injury.
  • Know what to do (and what not to). If someone you know experiences an eye injury, seek immediate medical attention from an optometrist. As you wait for medical help, make sure to never to touch, rub, apply pressure, or try to remove any object stuck in the eye.
Injuries other than grit in the eye or small scratches to the eye should be considered potentially serious. If you can't get to an optometrist right away (we have emergency numbers on our answering machines for you to call), go to the emergency room.

Halloween and costume contacts

Just 10 hours after she first put in a pair of colored contact lenses that she’d bought at a souvenir shop, Laura of Parkersburg, W.Va., had "extreme pain in both eyes," she said. "Because I had not been properly fitted by an eye care professional, the lenses stuck to my eye like a suction cup."

Even if you have perfect vision, you need to get an eye exam and a prescription from an eye care professional before you wear any kind of contact lens. A prescription ensures that the lens is a proper fit for your eye, among other things. If the lens doesn't fit properly, it could prove difficult to remove and cause serious injury.

In Laura's case, the lenses caused an infection and left her with a corneal abrasion. "I was in severe pain and on medication for four weeks and couldn't see well enough to drive for eight weeks," she said. "I now live with a corneal scar, vision damage and a drooping eyelid."

Safely Wear Costume Contact Lenses for Halloween With These Tips:

Get an eye exam from a licensed eye care professional such as an optometrist— an eye medical doctor — who will measure each eye and talk to you about proper contact lens care.

  • Obtain a valid prescription that includes the brand name, lens measurements and expiration date.
  • Purchase the colored contact lenses from a retailer who asks for a prescription, or at our office.
  • Follow the contact lens care directions for cleaning, disinfecting and wearing the lenses.
  • Never share contact lenses with another person.
  • Get follow-up exams as directed with your eye care provider.

If you notice redness, swelling, excessive discharge, pain or discomfort from wearing contact lenses, remove the lenses and seek immediate medical attention from Dr Boyer & Dr Brian. Eye infections can become serious very quickly and sometimes the damage is not reversible.
