August- Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

 Amidst all the hurrying and scurrying to get the school year started on the right foot, it’s important not to lose sight of the role healthy eyes play in a young person’s learning experience.

That’s why August has been designated as Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month.

Vision Should Be A Top Priority 

Good eyesight and eye health are especially important for the development of young children, and staying on top of vision concerns should be a priority for parents because it’s not always possible for children to realize when their eyes are not healthy.

Statistics show one out of 20 children between the ages of 3 and 5 has a serious eye problem that could result in permanent vision impairment if left untreated. Yet, 4 out of 5 preschoolers do not receive routine eye screening.

Common And Severe Eye Conditions

At Dr Boyer Optometry, we encourage you to include a comprehensive eye exam in your child’s back-to-school prep. Our kid-friendly optometrists can detect common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, as well as more severe eye conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), ptosis (drooping of the eyelid), and color deficiency (color blindness).

Fall Sports Injuries

The beginning of school also means the beginning of fall sports and other activities that could lead to eye injuries.

Every year, 42,000 Americans suffer a sports-related eye injury, with children making up the majority of those cases. You can help prevent your child from being part of that statistic by following a few basic safety rules:

• All children should wear the recommended protective eyewear while participating in sports or recreational activities.
• Children should only have access to age-appropriate toys and avoid toys with sharp or protruding parts.
• Keep cleaning supplies and sprays out of the reach of children.
• Teach the proper handling of or altogether avoid projectile toys like darts, bows and arrows, or airsoft/BB guns.

What Contact Lens Wearers Should Know

When it comes to eye health, Dr Brian and Dr Kenneth Boyer want to keep you up-to-date on the most accurate and helpful information.  Contact lens wearers in particular may be wondering if they should be handling their day-to-day health differently, in terms of preventative measures and daily usage of lenses.  We have included practical information below. 

CDC Guidance on Contact Lens Use

The CDC has offered the following guidance on safe use of contacts during the COVID-19 pandemic:

• Currently there is no evidence to suggest contact lens wearers are more at risk for acquiring COVID-19 than eyeglass wearers.

• Contact lens wearers should continue to practice safe contact lens wear and care hygiene habits to help prevent against transmission of any contact lens-related infections, such as always washing hands with soap and water before handling lenses.

• People who are healthy can continue to wear and care for their contact lenses as prescribed by their eye care professional.

Closed for 2 weeks in compliance with Federal and State suggestion

COVID-19 is having a dramatic impact on our lives, and businesses

We want to share an update on what Dr Boyer is doing to keep our patients and our employees safe during this national and world health crisis.

Although we have followed the guidance of global health experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus; with frequent hand washing, and regular cleaning and disinfecting of our facility and equipment, we are being asked to go further. 

State and federal authorities are suggesting, [with strong urging] that we close our business, along with other businesses for 2 weeks, effective March 18th till April 1st. We are complying with this directive in order to do our part for the social conscience of our community.

With that said, we will have some staff on hand to dispense ordered glasses, and contacts—by appointment only. You need only to call the office (909) 596-6756 to be scheduled for a quick 10-15 minute time slot. Our hours will be 10-5 Monday thru Friday with a half hour lunch closing from 12:00-12:30.
Should you have a medical or eye emergency, a doctor also will be available to handle that during this time. 

These guidelines will be followed until April 1^st, at which time we hope to resume normal business days and hours, unless we receive further notice or extensions.
